Introduction

Alan Dunnett was born in London in 1953. He read English at Oxford before going to drama school. After some years as a freelance theatre director, he became Acting Tutor at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama and then Head of Postgraduate Studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Most recently, he was an external examiner at MetFilm School, University of West London. A revised, extended version of his entry in Biggs, Tang and Kennedy's Teaching for Quality Learning at University can be found in the 5th edition. He retired as Course Leader, MA Screen, Drama Centre, CSM at the end of December 2013, and was then an Associate Lecturer, still teaching for MA Screen Acting and Directing, until the course closed in April 2022.

His poetry has appeared in magazines and anthologies, including The High Window, Dodging the Rain, Apocalypse Confidential, Ink Sweat & Tears, Mono, The Crank, Skylight 47, The Warwick Review, Poetry Salzburg Review, Stand, Orbis, The Rialto, Outposts, Weyfarers, Poetry Nottingham, Pennine Platform, Poetry News, New Poetry 6 (edited by Ted Hughes), The Methuen Book of Theatre Verse, The Robin Hood Book, The Best New British and Irish Poets 2016 (Eyewear); also, two pamphlets, Hurt Under Your Arm, published by Envoi, and In the Savage Gap. In 1989, he received an East Midlands Arts Writer's Bursary and was then part of EMA's 1990 New Voices Tour. There have been several competition short-listings, prize-winning at Ealing (2014), Norwich (2013), Nottingham (2012), Torbay (2008). Readings at Nottingham, Derby and Bradford Playhouses, Leicester Haymarket, The Troubadour, The Poetry Cafe and on Radio Nottingham and Radio Derby.
